Come celebrate the beginning of the Conservancy's eighth season at the River Center with a full morning of events!

The 2012 season schedule is full of outdoor activities, concerts, nature walks, and cleanups for the entire community to enjoy.

The morning starts off with Birder's Breakfast & Migratory Bird Walk. Join U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologist Noah Kahn for a morning bird walk along the C&O Canal to catch a glimpse of returning summer residents and spring migrants.

Arrive early at 7:45am for a bagel breakfast before the 8am walk. After the bird walk, Conservancy President Hedrick Belin will give opening remarks and perform the annual sounding of the River Center horn to officially open the 2012 River Center season.

Randa Steblez will lead a medicinal walk focusing on the history, folklore, and medicinal uses of plants along the C & O Canal. We'll learn about common trees, weeds, and wildflowers whose beauty and medicinal qualities are often overlooked.

The celebration will finish up with a live performance from Lilt, a duo on flute and bouzouki playing traditional Irish dance music. Come enjoy the music and help celebrate the River Center!

MEMBER INTERVIEW

Meet Bev Nerenberg, Wellness At Your Fingertips

SFP Editor: What is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT, "tapping")?

Bev Nerenberg: EFT is a very powerful SELF-HELP healing modality that is based on the Meridian Energy System in the body, from 5000 year old Acupuncture, combined with modern Western Psychology's Cognitive Behavior and Exposure Therapies. EFT can lessen and/or totally eliminate emotional and physical problems by gently "tapping" on certain meridian points while focusing on an issue such as anger, stress, anxiety, fear, cravings, physical pain, headache, phobias, and even PTSD, etc. It is easy to learn and easy to do, non-invasive, very effective, produces rapid results, can be done anytime/anywhere, and works even if you don't believe it will.

SFP Editor: How did you learn about this technique?

Bev Nerenberg: About four years ago, I received an email about a new DVD called The Tapping Solution (www.TheTappingSolution.com). It was about a healing modality that was based on acupuncture, and since I had been going for monthly acupuncture appointments for 20 years, it piqued my interest and I ordered the DVD. I found it fascinating and downloaded a free manual to learn all about it on a vacation I was taking the next day. One excursion on the vacation included walking along the side of a mountain which I was petrified to do because of my intense fear of heights. The night before, my anxiety got very intense, and I decided to try that "tapping thing" I saw in the DVD. It took me less than ONE minute to do the process. The next day, I was walking up the ledge on the mountain, inching over to the edge, and looking down with NO anxiety whatsoever. I was totally hooked!

SFP Editor: How does kinetic energy help with emotional health?

Bev Nerenberg: I'm going to get a little scientific here --- evidence from research indicates that stimulation of acupuncture points produces increased production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and regulates cortisol, the main stress hormone. These biochemical changes effect midbrain structures to reduce pain, slow the heart rate, decrease anxiety, induce calm and shut off the fight/flight/freeze response.
